Criminal Investigations Division
The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of Madison County, Alabama, is tasked with conducting thorough investigations into criminal activities. Its mission is to gather evidence, identify suspects, and support the prosecution of criminal cases. The division works closely with patrol officers and other law enforcement entities to ensure that crimes are investigated effectively, and victims receive justice.
Specialized Units within the CID
The division is structured into several specialized units to address the diverse nature of criminal investigations:
- General Investigations Unit
Handles a broad range of cases including financial crimes, domestic violence, and property crimes such as theft and burglary. - Crime Scene Unit
Responsible for processing crime scenes, collecting and preserving evidence, and supporting detectives in case development. - Major Crimes Unit
Focuses on serious offenses such as homicide, robbery, and sexual assault. - SORNA Unit
Manages compliance with the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA), ensuring sex offenders are properly registered and monitored.
Crimes Against Children Investigations Unit
Investigates child abuse and works in close coordination with the National Children's Advocacy Center (NCAC). This unit emphasizes a victim-centered approach, collaborating with forensic interviewers, child protective services, and prosecutors. - Task Force Officer (TFO) - Homeland Security ICAC
Addresses online child exploitation and internet crimes against children, focusing on cyber-related offenses involving minors. - Task Force Officer (TFO) - TNRCFL (Tennessee Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory)
Specializes in digital forensics to assist in investigations involving cybercrime, electronic evidence, and other technology-based offenses. - Task Force Officer (TFO) - FBI North Alabama Violent Crime Task Force (NAVCTF) Conducts collaborative investigations into violent crimes including homicides, robberies, gang activity, drug trafficking, firearms offenses and human trafficking.
- As a NIBIN Partner, the Madison County Sheriff's Office participates in the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN), a nationwide program led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). NIBIN uses advanced technology to compare ballistic evidence - such as shell casings - from crime scenes.
